On the 5th of September 2013. the Auckland Diocese of the Anglican Church will be deciding whether to divest its funds from the fossil fuel industry. Over the coming months, Anglican Dioceses all around the country will also be voting on this crucial issue, in what is set to be a landmark event in the history of environmental action in Aotearoa.

On Sunday 1 September 2013, St Paul's Auckland hosted a forum featuring four fantastic speakers explaining why divesting is the right thing to do from the perspectives of theology, climate science, social justice, and ethical investing.

This video is James Renwick's contribution to the forum.

James is an Associate Professor at the School of Geography, Environment and Earth Sciences at Victoria University in Wellington. He is a climate scientist who specialises in atmospheric physics, climate modelling and climate change. Over the past 8 years alone, since receiving his PhD in Atmospheric Science from Seattle, James has published over 70 peer-reviewed and widely-referenced scientific papers on a wide range of climate science issues - not least of which was being a contributing author for the last IPCC Report in 2007. True to the spirit of low-carbon, James pre-recorded this video for our event.

Other speakers to the forum included:

Ian McInnes · CEO, TEAR Fund New Zealand

Rod Oram · Business Journalist and Commentator

Matheson Russell, Senior Lecturer in Philosophy, University of Auckland

As a prelude to the motion at the Auckland Diocese Synod, Rev. Mathew Newton appeared on TV3, Firstline to debate the point. Watch it here: http://www.3news.co.nz/Fossil-fuels-A...
